Review: 'Miller’s Girl' Fails to Impress Despite Star-Studded Cast
That’s my warning to all who might consider wasting 93 minutes of your life and the price of a movie ticket to see this tepid “thriller” that’s basically an update of “Lolita” with a horror bent.
The recent release of 'Miller’s Girl,' a film aiming to blend thriller elements with a touch of 'Lolita,' falls short of expectations. This 93-minute movie, despite featuring Jenna Ortega, the rising star from Netflix's hit series 'Wednesday,' and Martin Freeman, known for his roles in 'The Hobbit' and 'Sherlock,' fails to deliver a captivating experience.
'Miller’s Girl,' written and directed by Jade Hadley Bartlett, is a retelling that lacks originality and engagement, a sentiment echoed since its inception in 2016. The film revolves around a literature professor (Freeman) and his student (Ortega), exploring themes of forbidden desire and literature, yet it fails to offer anything new or intriguing to its audience.
This movie, which I regretfully rate as a potential top contender for the worst films I've encountered, might leave you wishing for a quick escape or a remote control to switch to something more engaging. Its lackluster narrative and predictable plot twists contribute to an overall sense of disappointment.
While Freeman's acting prowess is not in question, 'Miller’s Girl' seems to be a mere blip in his otherwise commendable career. Ortega, on the other hand, needs to carefully choose her roles to avoid being typecast as "the creepy girl," a label that might stem from her roles in 'Wednesday,' the 'Scream' series, and the anticipated 'Beetlejuice 2.' Her potential is vast, and it would be exciting to see her in more varied roles.
For those planning a movie night, I would suggest skipping 'Miller’s Girl.' Instead, consider alternatives like 'American Fiction,' 'Poor Things,' 'Godzilla Minus One,' 'Wonka,' or even classics like 'Mean Girls' or 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.' Opting for these could save you from the disappointment of 'Miller’s Girl.'
